A strange boating accident claimed the life of a Key Largo man when he was impaled on the branches of some mangrove trees, according to recent reports. The accident occurred near the entrance of Jewfish Creek when Steven Reynolds, 64, was driving his 17-foot fishing boat from Blackwater Sound into the creek. The boat crashed into some mangroves, ejecting Reynolds and a passenger, Dennis Gobin, 62. Reynolds was killed; there is no word on Gobin’s condition. A nearby passenger in a sailboat heard the crash and alerted authorities.
Boating Accidents and Injuries
Florida is one of the most popular states for boating and use of personal watercraft or PWCs. In 2013, according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, there were 896,632 registered boats and watercraft in the state. That year, Florida also had the highest number of boating fatalities in the nation. Sixty-two people were killed in Florida boating accidents, compared to 49 in California, 32 in Texas, 30 in Washington, 27 in New York and 25 in Louisiana. The majority of these people were killed when they fell overboard, with 17 fatal injuries from this cause. Other common causes of death in boating accidents include collision with a fixed object, accounting for 14 deaths; flooded or swamped boats, with six deaths; collisions with vessels, with three deaths; and capsizing, with three deaths.
Many boating accidents, both those that cause fatalities and those that cause injuries, are due to the use of alcohol. Alcohol use is prohibited when piloting a boat in Florida, and those who “drink and boat” may find that they face the same penalties as those who drink and operate a motor vehicle. Despite the serious penalties, however, drinking and boating remain very common activities and lead to many serious boating accidents.
