According to police and a witness, a trip on Interstate 95 ended in a rollover accident caused by a blown tire. A witness caught the entire incident on a dash cam which revealed a pickup truck rolling over. The accident occurred on the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 shortly after 5 p.m.
The witness, Fred Kilian, was driving home when he saw the pickup truck in front of him blow a tire while traveling around 60 miles an hour. He stated that he was surprised as were other drivers who “all started gawking. They stopped in front of me.” Luckily, the driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured and walked away from the crash. Officials who investigated the incident states tire blow outs are more common in the summer due to high temperatures. The tire’s air pressure could also be a contributing factor.
Personal Injury and Blown Tires
When an accident occurs due to a blown tire, there may be grounds for a personal injury suit if you are injured. Drivers are responsible for inspecting their vehicles to ensure they are safe for travel. This means that if the tire pressure is too low, the driver is responsible for fixing it. If a driver knowingly drives with defective equipment, such as on tires with low pressure or damaged tires, he or she may be held responsible for any accidents that result.
However, there are some instances in which a blown tire is not the fault of the driver. If the driver hits unavoidable debris in the road, for example, he or she may not be found responsible for the resulting accident. In some cases, the blown tire may be the result of a mechanic, retailer or installer error. If this is the case, those parties may be held liable for any resulting injuries or damages.
