The Dangers of Speeding While Boating
Many people dismiss speeding as a thrill as opposed to a danger. However, speeding heightens the risk of being involved in an accident, whether you are driving a car or riding in a boat. Sadly, countless boaters have been seriously injured and even killed due to speeding while boating. When a boat is operated at excessive speeds many issues can arise, including:
- A compromised ability to react and stop quickly enough to avoid a collision
- Insufficient time to maneuver around an obstacle
- Increased severity of impact, resulting in more serious injuries and damage
Speeding is considered a reckless action and a total disregard for the safety of others. When someone is driving a boat at excessive speeds and a passenger or innocent bystander is injured, the victim likely has grounds to file a personal injury suit. A personal injury suit involving a boat is similar to those involving any other type of vehicle, including cars. The victim, or plaintiff, must show that the at-fault driver was operating the vehicle in a negligent manner. Because speeding is against the law, it is considered a negligent action. If the plaintiff can prove that the defendant was operating the boat in a negligent manner, they can be awarded compensation for injuries, pain and suffering and other damages.
