A passenger died in a car accident at Bird and Lejuene Roads in Coral Gables when the Mazda Miata in which he was riding collided with a Chevrolet Avalanche, according to reports. Tomas Montas, 20, was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center after the accident, where he died.
Police reported that the Avalanche struck the other vehicle when the driver of the Mazda attempted to make a left onto Lejuene Road. It is unclear at this point who had the right of way. Police continue to investigate the crash.
Left Turns Most Common Source of Intersection Crashes
Left turns are a commonly-stated reason for crashes in intersections. Because a left turn requires the driver to cross in front of oncoming traffic, it is typically an action that puts passengers at risk. If an oncoming driver does not stop, it is very likely that he or she will hit the passenger side of the vehicle in a collision known as a “T-bone.”
However, although the left-turning driver’s vehicle may be more exposed than one making a right turn or going straight, that does not mean that the driver is automatically at fault, as some assume. Drivers have the right-of-way when making a left turn at intersections where they are given a signal to do so. At a four-way stop, the driver turning left has the right-of-way as the cars proceed to enter the intersection taking turns, with the driver on the right having the right-of-way. There are several instances where another driver may be at fault if he or she hits a left-turning car.
This does not mean, of course, that it is wise to “demand” the right-of-way when turning left. When you are making a left-hand turn, you should always be aware and alert for drivers who may not yield to you, particularly if they are coming straight at a high rate of speed. It is always better to yield to a driver who is in the wrong than to experience a dangerous crash.
