A driver who hit a police officer, causing serious injuries, has now been charged with several crimes in connection with the accident, according to recent reports. Brandon Ward, 31, of Miramar, was charged with DUI with a blood alcohol content greater than .15 percent as well as serious bodily injury to another person.
The accident, which took place on Pines Boulevard and Douglas Road, involved 43-year-old officer Ben Burke. Burke was passing through the intersection with a green light when Ward t-boned his vehicle, causing it to be pushed across the intersection where Ward’s vehicle rolled over. Both men were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where they were treated. Burke has not yet been able to return to work due to the severity of his injuries.
DUI and Personal Injury
DUI is a criminal charge made against someone who was drinking at the time of an accident. However, even if the driver is convicted of this serious crime, the criminal case does not compensate the victim for his or her injuries.
In order to ensure that you are paid for your medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering, you must file a personal injury lawsuit if you are injured in a DUI crash. Regardless of the outcome of a criminal DUI case, a personal injury lawsuit will allow you to seek compensation for your injuries.
What Should I Do If I Am Injured In A Car Accident?
If you are injured in a car accident, the first thing to do is seek medical treatment. It is usually a mistake to wait to see if your injuries are serious enough to go to the doctor. Instead, seek treatment immediately if you are injured in any way after a car accident.
Next, collect as much information as possible about your accident. Be sure to look at the police report as soon as possible and ensure that it is accurate, as it may become very important in securing compensation for your injuries. In addition, try to identify any witnesses to the crash and collect their names, phone numbers and addresses. You should also try to learn the other party’s insurance information as soon as possible.
