Teen Killed in Speed Boat Accident

According to recent reports, a 17-year-old was killed when the speeding boat he was in hit a bridge in Wilton Manors. The victim, John Baker, was one of six teens onboard the 13-foot boat. According to one witness who saw the boat speed past him, the teens were going very fast. The accident occurred near in an area where the bridge had very low clearance and the location was very dark. Baker was declared dead at the scene. The other passengers were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, with three hospitalized with serious injuries.

The Dangers of Speeding While Boating

Many people dismiss speeding as a thrill as opposed to a danger. However, speeding heightens the risk of being involved in an accident, whether you are driving a car or riding in a boat. Sadly, countless boaters have been seriously injured and even killed due to speeding while boating. When a boat is operated at excessive speeds many issues can arise, including:
  • A compromised ability to react and stop quickly enough to avoid a collision
  • Insufficient time to maneuver around an obstacle
  • Increased severity of impact, resulting in more serious injuries and damage
Speeding is considered a reckless action and a total disregard for the safety of others. When someone is driving a boat at excessive speeds and a passenger or innocent bystander is injured, the victim likely has grounds to file a personal injury suit. A personal injury suit involving a boat is similar to those involving any other type of vehicle, including cars. The victim, or plaintiff, must show that the at-fault driver was operating the vehicle in a negligent manner. Because speeding is against the law, it is considered a negligent action. If the plaintiff can prove that the defendant was operating the boat in a negligent manner, they can be awarded compensation for injuries, pain and suffering and other damages.
