Interstate 95 Crash Kills One, Injures Two

An early morning crash on Interstate 95 has left one dead and two others injured. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Toyota Corolla and two motorcycles were traveling in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Miami Gardens Drive. The two motorcyclists, Miriam Perez-Duarte, 21, and Christian Salazar, 24, were driving side-by-side in the lane. For unknown reasons, they collided and were thrown from their motorcycles. Winnie Benjamin, 20, the driver of the Corolla, attempted to stop but collided with one of the motorcyclists, running over her leg. Perez-Duarte suffered serious injuries and was taken to Aventura Hospital. Salazar was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

Increased Risks for Motorcyclists

While motorcycle riding is an extremely popular pastime in the US, with nearly 8.4 million registered motorcycles on the road, it can also be a dangerous one. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 4,668 people died in motorcycle crashes in 2013. Another 88,000 motorcyclists were injured that same year. Experts estimate that motorcyclists are around 26 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a crash and are five times more likely to be injured. This is because motorcyclists do not have the same protection as occupants of a passenger vehicle. While some motorcyclists wear helmets, they do not benefit from other forms of protection like airbags, seatbelts or a metal vehicle frame.
