Hit-and-Run in Miami Beach Claims a Life

A man was killed in a recent hit-and-run crash in Miami Beach, according to police. Camera footage from the scene shows a driver hit a man on Collins Ave then flee the scene. After the incident, witnesses attempted to help the victim. One witness, a local pizzeria worker, said he heard the cries for help. He stated, “The guy was going incredibly fast and I guess he didn’t have time to stop. He hit him, he landed by Walgreens and he kept going.”

The victim, Alfredo Rodriguez, 48, was on his way home from work. The footage shows him getting off the bus and crossing the street when the car flies by and hits him. The victim’s son stated that he does not wish the driver ill. He says, “I know his intention was not to kill my dad…but I don’t know why he didn’t stop.”

The area where the crash occurred offers many popular restaurants, bars and shops which tourists frequent. This creates a dangerous environment for pedestrians. Cabbies in the area say speeding has always been a problem.

Police are currently searching for the person behind the wheel and ask for help from the public.

Speeding and Personal Injury

Speeding is defined as “exceeding the posted speed limit, driving too fast for conditions, or racing.” It is extremely dangerous behavior that can lead to serious injuries and even death. Speeding is also one of the components of aggressive driving, which leads to many injuries and deaths each year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 10,219 speeding-related fatalities in 2012. This equates to about 30 percent of the total traffic-related fatalities for that year. It is also estimated that speeding is the third most common cause of traffic accidents. When speeding is added to other negligent actions, like drinking and driving or distracted driving, the combination can be deadly.

If you have been injured by a negligent, speeding driver or have lost a loved one in a speeding-related accident, it is important that you speak to a personal injury attorney about your rights. When determining fault in a personal injury case, it is important that the victim show that the at-fault driver was acting negligently, such as speeding or drinking and driving.
