Highlighting the Need for Child Safety Restraints
Everyone who has a child has seen the public service announcements and heard the advice regarding the critical importance of using child safety restraint devices. Children are completely defenseless when an auto accident occurs, and these devices have proved to save lives many times over. Unfortunately, these devices do not always prevent death or serious injuries.
Below you'll find a detailed look at the Florida auto accident statistics that deal with the use or non-use of child safety restraint devices. You'll also find information regarding how you should proceed if you or someone you love has been harmed in an auto accident and you need the help of an experienced Florida auto accident lawyer.
Florida Auto Accident Statistics - Child Safety Restraint Devices
Florida separates the statistics for child safety devices in auto accidents by range of ages. For instance, the first group of ages runs from infancy to age three, the second concerns ages four and five and the final group runs from age five to age 17. The reason for this separation is that as children grow, different devices tend to be used until they begin to make use of seatbelts at or around five years old.
First, it should be noted that well over 90 percent of children reportedly use some sort of safety device in a vehicle. When one views the age range of zero to three, almost 9,000 children are injured every year in Florida auto accidents, but half, or seven, of the children of this age killed in these accidents were not using a safety device.
When expanding to the next age group, only two of the nine fatalities of children between the ages of four and five involved children who were not using a child safety device at the time of the Florida auto accident.
Finally, in the oldest group, 65 of the 87 children between the ages of five and 17 who were killed in accidents were not using a safety device. Overall, 79 of the 110, or more than 70 percent of minors killed in Florida auto accidents were not using these safety devices.*
