Florida Firefighters File Suit in Airboat Accident

Two Florida firefighters have filed a lawsuit against the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for injuries they sustained in an airboat accident, according to recent reports. Shawn Levine and Herbert Tyler were traveling down a narrow Everglades channel when an airboat collided with them, hurling Levine into the water and running over her, severely injuring her knee. She has required four surgeries in the past seven months to correct damage caused by the crash. Tyler received a concussion, torn shoulder and back injuries as well as injuries to his neck. The FWC airboat pilot did not help the two and even refused to call 911 at first. The couple is seeking $500,000 in damages and says that they hope that the lawsuit will bring about lasting changes in the FWC's policies on airboat use and make the water safer for others.

Suing a Government Agency

Suing a government agency is usually not as simple as suing a private citizen. In many cases, the government and its employees are protected to a certain extent by immunity. Whenever a government employee is acting within the scope of his or her duties and an injury results, it is important for the victim to be able to show that the employee was negligent in order to have grounds to file a lawsuit and collect compensation. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to handle a complicated case like this yourself. Most victims who have suffered injuries at the hands of government employees need the help of a personal injury attorney with experience in handling these types of cases. Under personal injury law, you may be entitled to several types of damages including payment for your medical bills, payment of lost wages or benefits while you are unable to work, and even money to compensate you for your pain and suffering. In some cases, you may also be entitled to other compensation as well. The personal injury attorneys at Bernstein & Maryanoff in Miami are here to help you if you must file a lawsuit against a government employee or agency. We can guide you through the complicated process of making sure that your case is filed properly against the right individuals or groups and can also help you pursue settlement. If your case goes to trial, our experienced attorneys will be there to ensure that you are treated fairly and that you have the best possible chance of recovering compensation.
